The decision to open a consulate here was taken seven years ago in 2016 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then US President Barack Obama.

Under a mutual plan to open new consulates in both countries, the United States plans to open two new consulates in India. Dr. Sandu had the honor of opening the Indian embassy in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, in 1992 after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

He said with the opening of the American Consulate General in Amritsar, people from border areas would get more facilities to get visas from here and traders could expand their business.

“The United States is proposing to open two new consulates in India. The foreign minister has assured us that we will try to open them in holy places,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Sandhu also discussed starting cargo services from Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport and strengthening air connectivity.

Emphasizing that improved connectivity will increase Amritsar’s growth potential manifold, he said, “There is limitless potential to increase air connectivity with America, Canada, Europe and Gulf countries. It helps traders, businessmen and farmers deliver fruits and vegetables to overseas markets, increasing their income.”
