Following a recent resolution adopted by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), outlets within the Golden Temple complex have started selling prepackaged water bottles. The move has raised questions about the decision of the Sikh religion’s highest body. SGPC member Kiranjot Kaur questioned whether the quality of regular drinking water was up to par, besides the plastic waste generated from discarded water bottles.

Kiranjot Kaur, member of SGPC, said, “Amritsar was founded around the holy Sarovar and everyone knows the importance of Darbar Sahib water. Devotees from all over the world draw holy water from Amritsar. We all drink ‘Chabir’s’ water and it is safe. Commercialization of water within the Durbar Sahib complex is not mandatory. Bottled water is not safe and also increases plastic waste. We have no objection that visitors want to drink bottled water and it is also available in the market. We provide underground water at various locations in the Golden Temple and do not require permission from vendors to sell packaged water bottles. ”

Kiosks within the Golden Temple complex sell cold drinks at a subsidized rate. In the last few years, they started selling noodles and other fast foods. Some members of the Sikh community object to the sale of such items inside the Golden Temple. The issue was being discussed in a subcommittee and there was a suggestion to remove kiosks selling cold drinks. However, the decision to sell packaged water bottles also questioned the quality of water provided by SGPC at ‘Chabir’s’.

“We have four tube wells that pump groundwater from depths of more than 500 feet. We conducted tests and the TDS (total dissolved solids) was accurate. Although testing is irregular, We have not received any complaints regarding water pollution. The water quality is good,” said Sukhjinder Singh, SGPC SDO.
