Taranjit Singh Sandhu, a former Indian ambassador to the US, will make his electoral debut in this year’s Sabah state election. He was on Saturday nominated as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Amritsar constituency in Punjab.

On Saturday, the Bharatiya Janata Party announced the eighth list of candidates for 11 more Lok Sabha constituencies. They include several leaders who recently joined the party from various political parties, including Bhartruhari Mahtab, Ravneet Singh Bittu, Sushil Kumar Rinku and Prineet Kaur.

– Born on January 23, 1963 into a family of educators, Taranjit Singh Sandhu attended the Lawrence School in Sanawal, Himachal Pradesh, then graduated with honors in History from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, and studied at Jawaharlal. I earned a master’s degree in international relations. Nehru University, New Delhi.

– According to the official website of the Indian Embassy in the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu joined the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988 after passing the civil service exam. He embarked on a diplomatic journey in the former Soviet Union (Russia) and served as Third Secretary (Politics)/Second Secretary (Commerce) of the Indian Mission from 1990 to 1992.

– After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he played a central role in the establishment of a new embassy in Ukraine. Subsequently, from 1992 he served as the head of the political and administrative department of the Indian Embassy in Kiev until 1994.

– From July 2013 to January 2017, Sandhu served as Deputy Minister at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC. Prior to that, he held the position of First Secretary (Political) at the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC from 1997 until 2000, where he was responsible for liaison with the US Congress.

– From July 2005 to February 2009, he also worked at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York.

– Mr. Sandhu also went on a diplomatic trip to Sri Lanka, where he served as India’s High Commissioner from January 2017 to January 2020. Prior to this, he had been the head of the political department at the Indian High Commission in Colombo since December. From 2000 until September 2004.

– Mr. Sandu presented his credentials to the former President of the United States on February 6, 2020 and served until January 31, 2024.

– He is married to Reenath Sandhu, a senior official in the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and currently serves as India’s ambassador to the Netherlands. Together they are the parents of a son and a daughter.
