Amritsar man sentenced to 12 years in prison for possessing 40 kg of heroin


Additional Sessions Court (Special Court) Judge Manila Chew on Saturday sentenced an Amritsar-based drug peddler to 12 years’ rigorous imprisonment for smuggling 40 kg of heroin.

The court also slapped me. INR100,000 fine to convict Gurlal Singh alias Guru of Manju village, Lopoke, Amritsar. He had been arrested on March 25, 2018 during a special inspection at T-point Kirti Nagar by the Special Task Force (STF) Ludhiana range.

Additional Inspector General (STF) Sunedeep Sharma said Inspector General Harbans Singh, in-charge of STF Ludhiana unit, arrested Guralal Singh on a tip-off as he was driving from Jamalpur.

The convict tried to avoid the police checkpoint by reversing his car but was apprehended by STF sleuths. The STF found a box recovered from the car hidden under an apple and containing heroin.

During the investigation, the STF found that Galal Singh had links with cross-border smugglers and was communicating with them using WhatsApp Calling, which was operating from an overseas number.

A case under sections 22, 61 and 85 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 was registered against the accused at Moti Nagar police station.
