Amritsar, April 5

After the BJP announced its candidates for the Lok Sabha elections in the state, the farmers announced that they would oppose the saffron party’s candidates under the banners of Kisan Mazdur Sangharsh Committee (KMSC) and Samyukt Kisan Morcha (a non-political organisation).

We have called on the people of 13,000 villages in Punjab to gherao and question the BJP candidates who come to campaign. Our allies will launch an anti-BJP campaign across the country. Sarwan Singh Pandher, Kisan Mazdur Sangharsh Committee

Members of several farmer unions launched an anti-BJP campaign from Chaba village in Amritsar.

Earlier, farmers had put up posters in several villages in Sanlur and Bathinda districts banning BJP leaders from entering the villages.

KMSC members Sarwan Singh Pandher, Gurbachan Singh Chaba and Gurulal Singh Mann said they would not allow BJP candidates to enter their villages not only in Punjab but across the country.

Farm unions have put up banners bearing a picture of Shubkaran Singh, who was killed in a clash with Haryana police at the Khanauri border in February as farmers were trying to reach the national capital. The posters also appeal to the BJP-led central government, saying, “Who would do such a thing… Who would do such a thing? Goliyan…”

Farmer leaders said district-level meetings would be held across the country and a campaign would be organised to expose the Modi government.

“We have called on people of 13,000 villages in Punjab to gherao and question the BJP candidates who have come there to campaign. Our allies will launch an anti-BJP campaign across the country,” Pandair said.

Farmer leaders Ratan Singh Randhawa and Dr Satnam Singh Ajnala of the Border Sangharsh Committee and Jamhoori Farmers Congress said issues pertaining to farmers in the border areas have never been taken up by the Central government.

“All farmer unions are speaking out against the BJP leaders and are hoisting black flags in villages. The BJP is adamant about handing over the entire agriculture sector to corporates. Protesting farmers are being attacked and locked up. This is the murder of democracy,” Randhawa said.
