Amritsar, April 22nd

Officials from the city’s urban planning department submitted a list of 136 buildings and colonies constructed in violation of norms in the north zone to the MC chief.

However, no such developments have been reported from other zones or sectors. Sources said the central zone had the highest number of illegal constructions, but little effort was being taken to curb them there.

In February, soon after taking over as MC commissioner, Harpreet Singh asked MTP department officials to ensure that no construction takes place without an approved site plan and other legal requirements. The Commissioner had asked the authorities to prepare a sectoral list of illegal buildings so that action against violators could be systematically planned.

Arun Khanna, assistant town planner posted in the north zone, submitted a list of 136 buildings and colonies being constructed illegally in the zone. Khanna was transferred from North Zone to South Zone on April 16, but he reportedly submitted his list on April 15.

According to information, most such buildings are owned by powerful people.

The building construction mafia has been operating in the city for the past many years. The MTP department was unable to take any concrete action against the mafia.
