The son of a former sub-inspector of police (ASI) was allegedly shot dead in broad daylight near Max City Colony here on Monday, officials said.

Police said that Rupinder Singh was recently released from prison after being granted bail in the murder case.

The victim was coming from the India Gate side with his friend when the incident occurred. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

ACP Sukhpal Singh said police were scanning CCTV cameras in the area for clues about the culprits.

The victim’s friend Harpreet Singh alias Happy said that Rupinder’s father Kuldeep Singh retired from the Punjab Police as an ASI. He said Rupinder fell in with his bad friends and started taking drugs.

Happy, who was with Rupinder at the time of the incident, said his family tried to stop him from doing such activities, but he refused to change his attitude.

During the coronavirus pandemic, Rupinder allegedly killed a young man identified as Prince, a resident of Kale village. He was arrested and sent to prison. About a month and a half ago, he got out of jail on bail.

He said they were heading towards Chekharta in their car and after reaching near Max City, four youths came in an SUV and opened fire on Rupinder.

The ACP said that as per preliminary investigation, Rupinder was a drug addict and old enmity could be the reason behind the murder.
