Amritsar, April 28th

Sanitation officials of the Municipal Corporation (MC) have received an assurance that their long-pending demands will be met. The assurance was given after a meeting with Municipal Commissioner Harpreet Singh.

The Safai Mazdoor union submitted a memorandum regarding its demands to the MC chief and gave a further 72-hour ultimatum, after which the union threatened to stage a demonstration. They met Additional MC Commissioner Surinder Singh and then the MC Commissioner, who assured them that all their demands would be fulfilled. Union president Vinod Bitta and president Surinder Tona said payment of provident fund and CPF dues of around 1,800 sanitation workers is pending.

The MC chief requested the authorities to make public the outstanding PF and CPF of the sanitary personnel. Bitta said the MC chief has appointed two inspectors and one superintendent to supervise the administrative staff in all five zones of the city and maintain records of Safai Sewak. One of the union’s demands was that Safai Sewak’s salary be announced by the 7th of every month.
