Amritsar’s Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport has achieved a significant milestone by handling more than 3 million passengers during the financial year 2023-24, which ended on March 31.

Samep Singh Gumtala, Global Convenor of the Fly Amritsar Initiative, a global advocacy organization dedicated to promoting and strengthening connectivity at Amritsar Airport, made the announcement in a press release.

According to Gumtala, analysis of recent data for March 2024 released by the Airports Authority of India shows that Amritsar airport had a passenger capacity of 3,085,598 passengers as of the end of the financial year 2023-33 (April 1 to March 31). It was revealed that it was recorded.

This was an increase of 22.6% compared to the previous year’s number of 2,516,518 passengers. Of the total number of passengers, there were 9,81,405 international passengers and 2,104,193 domestic passengers, representing an increase of 30% in international passengers and 19.5% in domestic passengers compared to the previous year.

Mr. Gumtala further highlighted that detailed data analysis by the Fly Amritsar Initiative revealed that Amritsar has risen from 25th to 23rd position in terms of total passenger numbers. The data, released monthly by the Airports Authority, includes a total of 40 international and 95 domestic airports.

The airport also saw an increase in total aircraft movements, from 19,251 to 21,648, an increase of 10.9% year-on-year. New international routes launched during 2023-24 include direct flights to Kuala Lumpur with AirAsia X and Malaysia Airlines, direct flights to London Gatwick with Air India, and flights to Rome and Verona in Italy with Neos included direct flights.

“In March 2024, the last month of FY 2023-24, Amritsar Airport had a domestic passenger volume of 2,17,495 and international passenger volume of 99,000, totaling 3,16,495 passengers, compared to March 2023. % increase. Currently, the airport serves 13 domestic and 9 international destinations including Dubai, Sharjah, Doha, Rome, Milan, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. connected to the city.

Approximately 65 flights can arrive and depart per day, and the average number of passengers per day is 10,000.

Mr. Gumtala expressed satisfaction with the airport’s traffic progress and predicted that it would attract more airlines once the number of passengers exceeds 3 million. He thanked all stakeholders including passengers, Punjabi diaspora, airlines and airport authorities for their support in achieving the milestone.

Mr. Gumtala stressed that despite the growth, there is a continued demand for bus connectivity with other cities in Punjab, which the state government is yet to address. Instead, the Man government is promoting and increasing bus connectivity from cities in Punjab to Delhi airport, he pointed out.
