In an important initiative aimed at strengthening community engagement and addressing residents’ issues on a priority basis, Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Tori on Thursday launched a helpline (WhatsApp) number (79738-67446), A representative from the government was appointed. We take complaints over the phone and ensure resolution within the stipulated period.

The aim of this move is not only to resolve citizen complaints efficiently and timely, but also to promote cooperation between citizens and government.

Chaitanya Sehgal, a public policy intern in the Washington DC office and a journalism student at DAV University, was appointed as the representative to register complaints over the phone. “On the first day, we received 11-12 calls from citizens and most of the complaints we received were related to faulty garbage collection and waste management issues. The complaints have been documented and from now on the DC and will be further forwarded to the concerned authorities and departments for timely resolution,” Chaitanya said.

The representatives will also develop area-wise details of civic issues and complaints received through the helpline numbers. Voice of Amritsar, a non-profit organization set up by civic bodies, will work with the district administration to ensure helpline numbers and information are disseminated across the city. “Often the problems are about garbage piles and other civic issues, but no one is held accountable and they remain unresolved. Through this initiative, we hope that these problems will be resolved by the government.” We hope so,” said Indu Aurora, president of VOA.

Successive governments have failed to resolve these issues due to MC failures and a lack of political will and regulation, but this move could be just another step towards a solution.
