Last night, high-speed winds caused a huge fire to break out at a garbage dump in Bagtanwala. Almost all of the garbage piled up at the 20-acre dump caught fire, causing panic in the area surrounding the dump. The fire broke out around 10 p.m., and within minutes the entire dumpsite had turned into a “volcano.” The intense flames could be seen from 2 kilometers away.

Neighbors gathered on Jabar Road, fearing the fire would spread to residential areas. Municipal Corporation (MC) fire engines reached the spot without delay but were unable to control the heavy flames. Municipal Corporation Commissioner Harpreet Singh also reached the dump site.

Local residents claimed that garbage had been burning at the dump for the past few days. The blaze was extinguished by firefighters on Wednesday evening, but the trash continued to boil and the fire flared up after winds began to pick up.

A solid waste management company’s vehicle and bioremediation machinery were parked near the dump. Company staff managed to drive these vehicles to safety. Meanwhile, activists from the Sanjh Sangharsh Committee, who are fighting for relocation of the garbage dump from the city, protested against the state government, local authorities and solid waste management companies. According to information, executives of the waste management company did not visit the site. Firefighters worked diligently to extinguish the blaze since early morning today.

“The fire stopped after the wind died down at midnight. Otherwise, fire brigade personnel were powerless to extinguish the high flames. About 19 tons of garbage was found just 1.5 km away from the Golden Temple. The air in the city is being polluted due to regular garbage burning, but the authorities concerned are not making any effort to end this menace,” said Sanjay Kumar, a resident of Bagtanwala area. Told.
