9 more papers filed in Amritsar, 31 candidates in the race: Tribune India

Nine more candidates contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar constituency filed their papers here on Tuesday, taking the total number of candidates in the poll fray to 31.

Celebrities who have filed their candidatures today include Iman Singh Mann and Paras Joshi of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar). Iman Singh is the son of SAD (Amritsar) President Simranjit Singh Mann. Paras Joshi is the son of SAD candidate Anil Joshi. Paras is a possible cover for his father. Family members of other candidates have also submitted documents to cover the candidates.

Resham Singh, an independent candidate backed by actor and activist Sonia Mann, has filed papers. Sonia Mann is believed to be close to the AAP leadership and has now announced support for Resham Singh, even though she was once touted as the local Lok Sabha aspirant.

Other independent candidates include homemaker Renu Bhalla. Her husband Jaspal Masih is a trader. Satbir Singh, 64-year-old Commission official. Dilbagh Singh is a self-employed person with no educational background. Prithvi Pal, a 66-year-old pensioner, and Harjinder Pal, a retired teacher.

The nomination process for the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for June 1 ended today. District election officials said scrutiny of candidates will be carried out on May 15 after which a final list will be prepared.

Candidates who wish to withdraw from the race have until May 17th to do so. Meanwhile, observers appointed by the Election Commission of India today held a meeting with officials involved in the voting process. The election observers include A Radhavinod Sharma (general), Shweta Shrimali (police) and Ganesh Sudakar (expenditure). The Election Observer has asked the Assistant Returning Officers (AROs) and Assistant Expenditure Observers of each parliamentary department to ensure compliance with ECI guidelines.
