Smugglers attack Excise Department team, 20 arrested

Yesterday evening, a team of Excise Department was attacked by a group of bootleggers in Gur Mandi area near Rambagh here. The criminals attacked the team with sharp weapons and damaged the team’s vehicle. The team had to flee the scene to protect themselves. The team subsequently seized at least 18 boxes of liquor from the intercepted vehicle. Inspector Ravinder Singh Bajwa of the Excise Department said they had received information about illegal sale of liquor in Ghar Mandi area. They approached Division A police station and intercepted a Verna vehicle (registration number PB02-CB-2226) along with policemen. A search of the car revealed 18 boxes of alcohol. He said the occupants of the car called their accomplices, who got into a scuffle with the excise department, smashed the car’s windows and attacked them with sharp weapons. They also threw stones and bricks, injuring two police officers.

The excise team informed A division police and a police team reached the spot. The suspects fled the scene, leaving the car behind. On the complaint of the inspector, the police arrested 20 people in the case, including Rohit, Pani, Vasu, Sahil, Ankush, Hira, Akash, Chetan, Daman Kumar, Bhola, Shiva, Bala and Tali.
