Amritsar’s trade will grow with Congress government at Centre: Shashi Tharoor

Shashi Tharoor and Gurjeet Aujla met with senior city officials and their main demand was opening up Wagah border trade.

Amritsar, May 26 – Former Union Minister Shashi Tharoor today assured businessmen in Amritsar that trade corridors would be opened, 200 per cent customs duty policy would be revised and packages would be provided to small scale industries as soon as a Congress Party government is formed at the Centre.

Shashi Tharoor today addressed a business meeting along with BJP candidate Gurjeet Singh Aujla at Holiday Inn Hotel, where dignitaries from the city expressed their views and discussed the challenges they faced under the BJP government in the last decade.

Representatives from CII, Voice of Amritsar, FICCI, Phulkari, India-Pakistan trade, textile manufacturing, doctors and real estate attended the business meet and presented the city’s major issues in front of Shashi Tharoor and Gurjeet Singh Aujla. Firstly, Shashi Tharoor said that now people want change but the change brought over the years is Modiism and not Hindu supremacy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photographs are now humiliating him everywhere.

Shashi Tharoor then praised Gurjeet Singh Aujla and said that Amritsar residents are very lucky to have a hardworking leader who saved people’s lives without worrying about himself during the Parliament attack and that he should be awarded. The Q&A session then began, during which the city’s traders first raised demands for perishable goods such as cargo and dry ports. To this, Gurjeet Singh Aujla replied that this demand was already on the agenda and would be fulfilled, all that was needed was the support of the people. Shashi Tharoor and Gurjeet Singh Aujla then answered questions one after the other, saying that they want a convention centre to be built in Amritsar, but it should be built in a place with parking and easy mobility.

Regarding the issue of the real estate sector not achieving the status of an industry during this time, Shashi Tharoor and Gurjeet Singh Aujla said whatever policies have been formulated in the last decade have only taken into account the opinions of a few large companies, while real estate is available to all small and medium-sized businesses.

Later, at a press conference, Shashi Tharoor and Gurjeet Singh Aujla said that many questions have come up in the business meetings and they are very important for trade between Punjab and Amritsar. Gurjeet Singh Aujla said that he has worked with Shashi Tharoor in the past and will continue to do so in the future. He said that he would like Tharoor himself to come to Amritsar and learn about trade so that when he becomes an MP again and raises these issues, a solution will be found as soon as possible. He said that new schemes will be made but work on old schemes will also continue so that old businesses do not die. Traditional industries will also come into the limelight again. In response to a question on whether Gurjeet Singh Aujla will be given the post of minister, Shashi Tharoor said that he would like to see Gurjeet Singh Aujla take up the post as he deserves it.
