Amritsar, May 26

Candidates running for the Indian Lower House (LS) elections will effectively have three days to campaign as a silent period during which no election activity is permitted will begin on May 29. Elections for LS seats will be held on June 1.

As per guidelines from the Election Commission of India (ECI), a silence period will come into effect 48 hours before the election date, during which no candidate will be allowed to campaign.

Candidates are sweating in the heat along with party leaders addressing support rallies. With the maximum temperature already touching 44°C, election activities, especially road shows, rallies and door-to-door canvassing, have already become difficult. Candidates are preferring indoor events instead of outdoors. The rising temperature is also expected to pose a challenge to the Election Commission’s efforts to increase voter turnout. In the last LS elections, only 57.04% of the votes were cast in the constituency.
