District election officials are pulling out all the stops in their creative efforts to increase voter turnout for India’s upcoming Lok Sabha elections on June 1. They are incorporating humor from popular Bollywood movies, using famous lines from blockbuster films as memes and urging voters not to let the heatwave stop them from voting on election day.

To encourage voter participation through social media campaigns, these film posters feature lines like “Pushpa jhukega nai, vote pan se rukega nai” set against the backdrop of Allu Arjun’s Pushpa avatar and the famous climax scene from DDLJ, which has been adapted into “Aao Simran, Ghar Ja Ke Vote Payye” where SRK and Kajol are running this season’s social media election game.

Political parties are not far behind, too, mixing and remixing popular Punjabi songs to encourage more voters to participate on polling day, June 1. Amid this digital media frenzy, the Punjab Election Commission is using memes to reach out to voters, especially the young and first-time voters, using quirky lines and dialogues from famous films. For example, Akshay Kumar’s character in Jolly LLB 2 urges voters who would prefer to sit still at home on June 1 to join hands and say, “Kucch Toh Sharam Karo.” Meanwhile, Manoj Bajpayee’s character in Gangs of Wasseypur asks for his car keys so he can rush to the polling booth. And of course, Sonakshi Sinha’s Faridan in Heera Mandi urges voters to go to the polls with the tagline, “Listen to Faridan and go vote.”
