India Today's 'Exit Poll' graph for Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency is fake

No details of these exit polls have been published on any of India Today’s platforms and the channel has categorically stated that the viral graphic is fake.

What is the claim?

An image of the exit poll results, purportedly “conducted by the news channel India Today,” for the Lok Sabha elections in Amritsar, Punjab, has been circulating widely on social media. The graph shows that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is projected to win the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat with 33 percent of the votes, followed by the Indian National Congress with 28 percent, the AAP with 25 percent, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) with 10 percent.

user X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook Many people shared the image and tagged BJP’s Amritsar constituency candidate Taranjit Singh Sandhu in the posts. The posts claim that exit polls have predicted Sandhu to win the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat. The image garnered a lot of attention on X, with one post being viewed more than 25,000 times.

Voting in Amritsar will take place on June 1 in the final phase of the ongoing general election. Sandhu of the BJP is taking on Gurjeet Singh Aujla of the Indian National Congress, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal of the AAP and Anil Joshi of the SAD in Amritsar.

However, the viral graphic predicting a BJP victory in Amritsar turned out to be fabricated.

What did we find?

An extensive search of India Today’s official website and social media accounts did not find any exit poll predictions for Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency 2024. The company’s YouTube channel also did not have any video report regarding such predictions.

After investigation, it was found that the graphic template used for the virus image is India Today – Axis My India Exit Poll Report Exit polls for the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections had predicted that Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP would win 83 seats in 2022. However, the numbers in the viral image are different.

It was also noticed that India Today had used the same template for its exit poll predictions for the 2022 state assembly elections. Uttar Pradesh (archive here) and Uttarakhand (archive here) will begin in March 2022.

However, there are no predictions for the 2024 Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency elections as per India Today exit polls using the same template.

Rahul Kanwal, News Director of sister channels India Today and Aaj Tak, shared the now-viral image, X (archive hereOn May 28, IndiaToday announced, “We know there’s a lot of interest in the @IndiaToday Axis My India exit poll results. But be assured that any ‘poll’ you see by June 1st, 6:30 PM will be fake. We love the buzz around our polls but we don’t want the confusion to result from it. Beware of fake polls. See you June 1st, 5 PM.”

According to guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India, exit polls Broadcast or Publication Till polling in all seven phases of the 2024 general elections is concluded by 6:30 pm on June 1.
