Teen dies of drug overdose, friends arrested

A 22-year-old youth, Khushpreet Singh, a resident of Muktsar Sahib, died of an alleged drug overdose yesterday. Following a complaint from his family, police have booked two of his friends under charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

The arrested have been identified as Giddharbaha Raman Singh, Muktsar Sahib and an unidentified accomplice. Khuspreet had come to Amritsar along with some friends to visit the Golden Temple on May 25.

The deceased man’s father, Gurbij Singh, told police that his son had come to the Golden Temple with friends, including Raman Kumar. He said that on Wednesday, Raman called him to say that Khushpreet had met with an accident and was being taken to Civil Hospital. By the time they reached the hospital, he said, doctors had declared Khushpreet dead and his friends were missing from the hospital. Doctors who examined Khushpreet said he had died of a drug overdose. ASI Sukhdev Singh said a case had been registered against the suspects and investigations were on to arrest them.
