Amritsar, June 10

The Shaheedi Gurpurbh (martyrdom anniversary) of Guru Arjan Dev was observed with reverence as per Khalsai tradition at the holy place on Monday.

Stalls offering sweet water (chhabir) and langar dotted the streets of Amritsar. On a day marked by sweltering heat, devotees performed ‘sewa’ at langar stalls and gurdwaras, regardless of personal convenience.

Devotees from across the country and abroad queued to pay their respects at the Golden Temple and Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, the birthplace of Guru Arjan Dev, the fifth guru of Sikhism.

The pilgrims also paid homage to the historic Gurdwara Ramsar, where Guru Arjan Dev compiled Guru Granth Sahib and wrote Sukhmani Sahib. They took holy bath in the Amrit Sarowar of the Golden Temple and listened to Gurbani recitation in the sanctum sanctorum of these Sikh temples.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee celebrated the martyrdom anniversary of the fifth Guru at Gurdwara Ramsar Sahib. On the occasion, a bhog from Akhand Path was offered, followed by singing of sacred hymns by a group of Kirtani Jatha. Kirtani Jatha of Hazri Ragi Nirmaljit Singh of Sri Harmandir Sahib performed Gurbani Kirtan, Sukhdev Singh offered ardas and Bhai Nirmal Singh recited Hukamnama.

Preacher Balwant Singh Anokot of the SGPC Dharma Prachar Committee spoke about the life of Guru Arjan Dev. He said that Guru Sahib became a martyr for justice and truth and liberated humanity from fear by fighting oppression.
