Ranjit Singh Dhillon took over as the new Commissioner of Police (CP) of Amritsar today. He was earlier posted as Commissioner of Police, Ferozepur, Border Ranges and was transferred to Amritsar two days ago.

Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Brar handed over the case to Dhillon.

He was among the eight police officers who were transferred in the first list released by the Punjab government after the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

Dhillon served in various posts in Batala, Patiala and Tarn Taran before being promoted as superintendent of police in Ferozepur district a year and a half ago. Before taking over as police commissioner on Monday, Dhillon received a salute from Punjab Police officials.

Dhillon told the media that maintaining law and order and policing in a professional manner will always be his top priority, while he will have a zero tolerance attitude towards gangsters, drug dealers and criminals.

“This is my first posting in this holy city as it is home to revered places like the Golden Temple and other historical and cultural heritage sites. Many super VIPs visit the city every day,” Dhillon said.

“Our primary mission is crime detection and prevention. Complaints are given priority and resolved as quickly as possible,” the newly appointed police commissioner said.

“Drug addiction is a problem in Punjab, especially in the border areas, but it is more of a social issue and all sections of society should play their role in eradicating this menace. As far as legal action is concerned, Punjab Police will do all it can to stop this problem,” Dhillon added.

He said necessary steps would be taken to address the problem of traffic congestion occurring in various parts of the city.
